У поданому літературному огляді в хронологічному порядку описано розвиток подвійного впливу водню на формування та якість виливків з алюмінієвих сплавів і, відповідно, неоднозначне відношення до нього з боку вчених і практиків ливарників. До середини минулого століття існувала одностайна думка, що водень дуже шкідлива домішка, причина різних видів браку, зниження виходу придатного та погіршення економічних показників виробництва, тому необхідно максимально зменшувати його вміст у зливках і фасонних виливках. Однак дослідженнями, виконаними в наступні роки, доказано, що використання розчиненого в алюмінієвих сплавах водню в якості легуючого або модифікуючого елемента дозволяє значно зміцнити низку сплавів у деформованому стані при збереженні задовільної пластичності, вперше забезпечити можливість холодної пластичної деформації заевтектичних силумінів. Особливо важливу роль відіграє водень у формуванні складних фасонних виливків з металоємними вузлами, живлення яких з метою усунення концентрованих раковин та утяжин вимагає збільшення кількості надливів, технологічних напусків та схилів з великими непродуктивними затратами рідкого металу, що економічно не вигідно. В той же час, підвищення вмісту водню в розплаві дозволяє замінити браконосні усадочні дефекти допустимою розсередженою газовою мікропористістю, зберігаючи конфігурацію виливка близькою до рисунка деталі і покращуючи герметичність металоємних вузлів. Крім того, загальновизнаний позитивний вплив водневої пористості на підвищення тріщиностійкості та зниження гарячеламкості. При цьому механічні властивості залишаються на рівні експлуатаційних вимог. У практичному плані заслуговує уваги водневе рафінування алюмінієвих сплавів, як найдешевший екологічно чистий метод рафінування, який на відміну від інших методів забезпечує вибіркове видалення найбільш крупної фракції твердих включень, залишаючи дрібні для виконання ролі зародків кристалів. При цьому методі плавка попередньо наводнених шихтових матеріалів перетворюється з традиційно забруднюючої розплав у рафінуючу. В огляд включено останні розробки ФТІМС НАН України, в яких вперше дана відповідь на питання: якщо в одних організаціях (ВІЛС, МАТІ) барботажна обробка розплаву водяною парою використовується для забруднення (в дослідних цілях) включеннями Al2O3, а в інших (ФТІМС НАН України) за допомогою тієї ж операції видаляють вибірково найбільш крупну фракцію тих же включень, то що ж відбувається в дійсності?; розкрито механізм заміни газової пористості усадочною раковиною при автоклавному литті і литті під низьким тиском; вивчено властивості пористого металу, що важливо для оцінки експлуатаційного стану металоємних вузлів виливків з пористою будовою; випадки локального порушення герметичності в зоні газової пористості; воднева пористість – індикатор вмісту в розплаві включень Al2O3 з можливістю використання результатів аналізу по ходу плавки; водень як складова частина структури рідкого стану; суміщення наводнення з іншими видами обробки розплаву.
