An overview of approaches to assessing the stability of the content of chemical elements in the composition of synthetic cast iron and the mechanical properties of brake pads made of it and friction Khanin wedge for railway cars. The concept of «stability» is defined as the ability of the process of smelting synthetic cast iron and making castings from it to function without changing its parameters, being in equilibrium and maintaining consistency over time. It was found that the coefficients of variation of the content of C, Si, Mn, P, S in synthetic cast iron for the manufacture of brake pads and Khanin wedge are in the range from ~ 0.01 to 0.21, the hardness of HB and the strength of brake pads to fracture was 0.084 and 0.124. This indicates sufficient stability of the chemical composition of synthetic cast iron. It is shown that the adjustment of the arrays of primary factory information regarding the content of chemical elements in the composition of synthetic cast iron by removing erroneous values from the data arrays does not change the average content of C, Si, Mn, P, S, and this certifies the reliability of this information. It is established that the values of the content of chemical elements in the composition of synthetic cast iron for this purpose do not correlate with each other. The hardness and fracture toughness of the brake pads and the hardness of the Khanin wedge do not correlate with the content of individual chemical elements or with the carbon equivalent of such cast iron. The ways of strengthening the requirements in the standards for the level and permitted ranges of distribution of the content of chemical elements in the composition of synthetic cast iron, intended for the manufacture of brake pads for railway rolling stock, are recommended. The sulfur content in synthetic cast iron for the manufacture of these foundries should be reduced from 0.20 to 0.05 %. It is emphasized that in order to prevent consumers from receiving pads with undetected surface defects in the standards for these products, it is necessary to provide for their mandatory shot blasting.
