Abstract

The demand for metal-matrix composite materials is growing annually, which is caused by the intensive development of high-tech industries. Among existing composites, due to their physical and mechanical properties, operational characteristics and economic indicators, layered materials attract considerable attention. Titanium-aluminum composites are of practical interest, especially for the aerospace industry and shipbuilding. The paper presents a layered material of the VT1-0/AK8M system, manufactured by the method of liquid-phase fabrication, namely by infiltration of an aluminum alloy melt into the gap between titanium plates, the influence of technological parameters on the microstructure of the resulting composites and their mechanical properties are determined. It was found that, regardless of the technological parameters, a transition layer is formed at the interface between titanium plates and aluminum alloy without obvious voids and noticeable defects. Increasing the holding time of titanium packages in the melt, both at 670 °C and 720 °C, leads to an increase of the transition layer thickness. Changing the melt temperature at the same holding time did not significantly affect on the transition layer thickness. The main parameter affecting the mechanical properties of the studied composites at both melt temperatures and the same holding time is the volume of aluminum alloy and titanium in the material: a decrease in the volume of aluminum alloy from 38,6% to 18,9% led to an increase in the ultimate tensile strength from 339±6 MPa to 386±15 MPa. The experimental values of the ultimate tensile strength correlate with the calculated values according to the rule of mixtures, which allows us to predict the properties of layered titanium-aluminum composites reliably. The research results indicate the further studies relevance of the physical and mechanical properties of the obtained VT1-0/AK8M layered composite materials to improve their operational characteristics.
